Soccer Hall of Fame Announces No Builder or Veteran Elected to '09 Class

February 03, 2009
ONEONTA, NY (February 2, 2009) – The National Soccer Hall of Fame announced today that no Builder or Veteran Player was elected to the Hall of Fame in 2009. “We are disappointed in this result,” Hall of Fame President Steve Baumann said. “There were several strong candidates on each ballot, but our voters have determined that none reached Hall of Fame standard at this time. As we do at the end of each election cycle, the Hall of Fame staff and the Eligibility and Awards Committee of the Board of Directors will dig into the results and the voting patterns to determine if we have a process that best serves soccer in the United States.”

The top candidate in the Builder election was current Los Angeles Galaxy and former U.S. Men’s National Team coach Bruce Arena with 32 votes, being named on 47.76% of the 67 votes cast.  “Bruce certainly has had and will continue to have a positive impact in the coaching world. The collegiate and MLS championships won plus the tremendous growth in stature of the men’s national team during his tenure from 1998 to 2006 and now his leadership of the Galaxy are testimony to his outstanding career.”
