Colorado Sports Hall of Fame's "Championship Saturday" Continues

DENVER—The fourth annual CHSAA "Championship Saturday" event had the second-highest attendance figure of any high school football event in Colorado high school history, and the highest paid attendance in high school football history.

Presented by the Colorado Sports Hall of Fame and held at INVESCO Field at Mile High on Nov. 29, the high school class 5A and 4A championship games were watched by a crowd of 12,411 second highest in state high school football history.

Baseball Hall of Fame Veterans Committee Considers Vada Pinson

COOPERSTOWN, N.Y. – Like most center fielders of his era, Vada Pinson could run. When it came to combining running with power hitting, however, Pinson rose above many of his contemporaries.
 
The combination made Pinson a productive big league player for 18 seasons, and has earned him a spot on the final post-1942 Veterans Committee ballot at the Baseball Hall of Fame.

Michael Phelps Named Sports Illustrated Sportsman of the Year

(New York, NY December 2, 2008) – Sports Illustrated Group Editor Terry McDonell announced that Michael Phelps is the 2008 Sports Illustrated Sportsman of the Year. Phelps is SI’s 55th Sportsman of the Year and joins Muhammad Ali, Lance Armstrong, Michael Jordan, Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods, among other athletic greats who have received this award.  
 
The SI Sportsman of the Year is presented annually to the person or team who transcended the year in both athletic performance and character. The descriptor, “It is not for the victory alone that he is honored. Rather, it is for the quality of his effort and the manner of his striving,” lifted from the pages of SI in 1957, represents the defining principle of the award.

Andrew Kinard Receives Defender of Freedom Award

Colin Jose Named to Canadian Soccer Hall of Fame

ONEONTA, NY (December 2, 2008) – Colin Jose, the pre-eminent historian of soccer in North America and Historian Emeritus of the National Soccer Hall of Fame, has been selected for induction into The Soccer Hall of Fame of Canada. Jose, a Canadian citizen, has documented soccer in the United States and Canada from its earliest days and is often the first stop for those interested in the history of the game in either country. The Colin Jose Media Award, presented by the National Soccer Hall of Fame for an outstanding career in soccer media, honor Jose’s research and writing skills and, in its short history, has become a much coveted honor.

Baseball Hall of Fame To Announce Frick Award Dec. 9

WHAT:  The National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum will announce the winner of the 2009 Ford C. Frick Award, presented annually since 1978 for major contributions to baseball broadcasting. The winner will be recognized during the annual Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony on July 26 in Cooperstown, N.Y.

ISHA Honors Swimming Hall of Fame's Bob Duenkel

Bob Duenkel, the Executive Director/Curator of the International Swimming Hall of Fame (ISHOF) in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, was recently honored as the recipient of the most prestigious award presented by the International Sports Heritage Association (ISHA). Duenkel received the Schroeder Award for Distinguished Service during the Evening of Champions dinner at ISHA’s 38th Annual Conference held in Cincinnati, Ohio in mid-November.

ISHA’s conference titled “Celebrating Sports Heritage – Traditions We Embrace” was hosted by the Cincinnati Reds Hall of Fame and attracted nearly 100 attendees from Canada, China, Puerto Rico, Scotland, Singapore and the continental United States. Among the sports heritage institutions represented at the conference were the College Football Hall of Fame, Georgia Sports Hall of Fame, The Hall at Patriot Place, Jack Nicklaus Museum, Michigan Sports Hall of Fame, National Wrestling Hall of Fame & Museum, Pro Football Hall of Fame, Saskatchewan Sports Hall of Fame and Museum and Singapore Sports Museum.

College Hall of Fame Awards Gala To Feature Greats

DALLAS, November 26, 2008 - The National Football Foundation & College Hall of Fame (NFF) highlighted today that its fabled NFF Annual Awards Dinner, which will take place Dec. 9 at the Waldorf- Astoria in New York City, promises to be one of the most memorable in history.

With an anticipated record turnout of 1,600-plus, the 2008 banquet will be the first under newly elected NFF Chairman Archie Manning.

Tennis Hall of Fame & ITF Give Guillermo Vilas Davis Cup Award

NEWPORT, RI -- The International Tennis Hall of Fame and the International Tennis Federation (ITF) have announced that Guillermo Vilas is this year's recipient of the Davis Cup Award of Excellence.  Presentation of the award will be made on Saturday, November 22 during the Davis Cup by BNP Paribas World Group Final between Spain and Argentina to be held in Mar del Plata, Argentina. Presenting this prestigious award to Vilas will be the President of the International Tennis Federation Francesco Ricci Bitti, joined by past award recipients Neale Fraser (2001), Pierre Darmon (2002) and Manolo Santana (2004).
 
“The International Tennis Hall of Fame and the ITF have the great honor of presenting Guillermo Vilas with this year’s Davis Cup Award of Excellence," said Christopher Clouser, Chairman of the International Tennis Hall of Fame.
