1957 - 2007 Celebrating 50 Years

The Alberta Sports Hall of Fame and Museum is getting ready to celebrate it's 50th Anniversary in 2007.The feature event of the year will be the Induction Banquet to be held on June 1, 2007 in Red Deer.

Festivities will include a tribute to the Hall of Fame Members and feature the history and growth of the Alberta Sports Hall of Fame and Museum.

About Us

Located along Highway 2 on the west edge of Red Deer, the Alberta Sports Hall of Fame and Museum is an interactive, hands-on celebration of Alberta's sporting history. The over 7,000 square feet of exhibit space includes a multisport interactive virtual system with hockey, baseball, soccer, basketball and football, a baseball pitching field, a 200 meter wheelchair challenge; a press box where you become the sportscaster; a 40 seat theatre and the Honoured Members Gallery. The Alberta Sports Hall of Fame and Museum also has over 7,000 artifacts of Alberta Sports history in its collection, showcasing many of these items in a number of displays.

The Alberta Sports Hall of Fame and Museum also offers an education program, Group activities, party/reception facility rental, and meeting room rental may be booked for public use.

History Highlights

1957 - The Alberta Amateur Sports Hall of Fame was founded by the Alberta Branch of the Amateur Athletic Union of Canada (A.A.U.of C.). It operated from the Molson House in Edmonton which was the first of many temporary homes for the Hall of Fame. These locations included the Percy Page Centre (St. Albert), Dr. Jean Leiper's basement (Calgary), Max Bell Arena (Calgary), Petro Canada Building (Calgary), Alpine Building (Calgary), and the Percy Page Centre (Edmonton).

1958 - Charles Cheesman-Boxing Builder, Wilf Greaves-Boxing Athlete, Hugh Sloan-Boxing Athlete, and George Sutherland-Track & Field Athlete were the first inductees.

1972 - Dissolution of the A.A.U.of C. meant that the Alberta Amateur Sports Hall of Fame would now be administered by Sport Alberta, through its Board of Directors.

1979 - Under the stimulus of the forthcoming 75th Anniversary of the Province, program objectives were broadened by Sport Alberta to begin to honour all outstanding Alberta Athletes, amateur or professional, and to begin to collect memorabilia which reflected the whole of Alberta's sporting heritage.

1980 - Forty-six athletes and builders were inducted into the newly named Alberta Sports Hall of Fame and Museum including, for the first time, professionals.

1981 - A contest was held and a logo was chosen from over 120 submissions. The design shows the athlete supported by the Alberta mountains, reaching for the flame of triumph. The two halves of the design symbolize the two aspects of the ASHFM - Hall of Fame, and Sport Museum. Informal conversations were first held with the Premier regarding a permanent home for the Hall of Fame. The Program mandate was altered to regulate the number of inductees honoured each year to a maximum of seven.

1983 - The 25th Anniversary of the Hall of Fame was celebrated with 300 people in attendance at the Induction Banquet.

1986 - February 8th, saw the opening of the first ASHFM display which was located in the Petro Canada Centre in Calgary.

1987 - The ASHFM became a Standing Committee of the Alberta Sport Council on February 1, newly formed Alberta Sports.

1992 - The Alberta Sport Council announced that Red Deer would become the new and permanent home for the ASHFM once funds were raised to build, equip, and endow it.

1994 - An Act of legislation resulted in a merger of the Alberta Sport Council with the Alberta Sport, Recreation, Parks and Wildlife Foundation. The ASHFM remained as a program of the Foundation. The ASHFM relocated from Calgary to Red Deer on October 1.

1997 - April 1, the Alberta Sports Hall of Fame and Museum gained Society status. Governed by a Board of Directors, the Hall of Fame and Museum Society continued to fund raise to build a new and permanent home in Red Deer.

1998 - May 22 the Alberta Sports Hall of Fame and Museum officially broke ground towards building a permanent home in Red Deer.

1999 - July, the Alberta Sports Hall of Fame and Museum moves to it's new permanent location by Heritage Ranch in Red Deer.

2000 - May 26th, official opening of the new Alberta Sports Hall of Fame & Museum.

2005 - Expanded museum to include two new galleries – Alberta Hockey Hall of Fame and Ice and Snow – the Spirit of Winter.
