NEWPORT, RI – The International Tennis Hall of Fame has announced that the Hall of Fame Champions Cup will be played August 13-17 in Newport and will feature eight champions of tennis. Hall of Famers and former world No. 1 champions John McEnroe, Jim Courier and Mats Wilander have already committed to playing the event, which returns to Newport as the fourth stop on the 2008 Outback Champions Series.
1999 Hall of Famer John McEnroe is one of the most popular and successful players in the sport of tennis. He represented his country in Davis Cup play a record 13 years and captured 17 Grand Slam titles. Overall, McEnroe won 155 career titles, 77 in singles and 78 in doubles. Last year in the Hall of Fame’s Champions Cup, McEnroe reached the finals, bowing to 2007 Newport Champion Todd Martin. On May 4th, McEnroe won the Champions Cup event in Boston, his first title in the Outback Champions Series.
In 2005, Jim Courier was elected to the International Tennis Hall of Fame. Courier was the ATP Tour Player of the Year in 1992 and finished the year as the world’s No. 1 player. He won his first Grand Slam at the French Open in 1991, when he beat Andre Agassi in the first all-American final at Roland Garros since 1954. A four-time Grand Slam champion, Courier won a total of 29 titles, 23 in singles and 6 in doubles. Last year he placed third in the Newport Champions Cup event.
2002 Hall of Famer Mats Wilander was the most dominant player on the men’s professional tour in 1988, winning three of the world’s Grand Slam singles championships -- the Australian, French and US Open. An eight-time Grand Slam champion, Wilander was ranked in the World Top 10 seven consecutive years (1982-1988), reaching No. 1 in 1988. In his 15 year career he captured 33 singles titles and seven doubles titles. He was a member of Sweden’s Davis Cup team 1981-90, reaching seven straight finals (1983-89) winning three Cups (1984-85, 1987).
These three Hall of Famers will be joined by five other tennis champions - soon to be announced - in the five-day singles round-robin competition, one of eight tournaments in the 2008 Outback Champions Series. The other five competing champions to be announced will meet the Series’ criteria of either having held a top 5 singles ranking, been a Grand Slam singles finalist or a singles player on a Championship Davis Cup team during their ATP tour playing careers. During the August 13-17 tournament competition, there will be three matches daily Wednesday through Saturday on the Hall of Fame’s Bill Talbert Center Court, with two matches played on Sunday, consisting of the Championship Final and third place match. Matches are played in the best of three set format, with the 3rd set consisting of a Champions tie-break. The Champions tie-break is defined as the first player to reach 10 points with a margin of 2 points.
