NFF chairman Archie Manning has announced the 2008 Divisional College Football Hall of Fame Class, which considers players and coaches from the NCAA Football Championship Subdivision (formerly I-AA), Divisions II, III, and the NAIA for induction. This year's class will be inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame during the Enshrinement Festival, July 18-19, in South Bend, Ind. The new group includes players Jim Ballard, QB, Mount Union (Ohio) (1991-93); Ronald McKinnon, LB, North Alabama (1992-95); John Randle, DE, Texas A&M- Kingsville (1988-89); Brad Rowland, HB, McMurry College (Texas) (1947-50); and coaches W.C. Gorden - Jackson State (1976-91): 119-47-5 record; Doug Porter - Mississippi Valley State (1961-65), Howard (1974-78), Fort Valley State (Ga.) (1979-85, 1987-96): 166-107-5.


NFF and FWAA to Host Inaugural Football Forum


The inaugural NFF/FWAA Football Forum, which is entitled "College Football: Today and Tomorrow" and presented by the Heisman Trophy Trust, will be held this Thursday and Friday, May 15-16, in the Dallas area. Scheduled panelists include Army director of athletics Kevin Anderson; Kansas head coach Mark Mangino; TCU head coach Gary Patterson; Ohio State head coach Jim Tressel; Florida State University president Dr. T. K. Wetherell; Washington head coach Tyrone Willingham; and Notre Dame director of athletics Kevin White.

Thousands of college football fans from across the country will join the National Football Foundation from July 18-19 at the College Football Hall of Fame in South Bend, Ind., for the organization's annual Enshrinement Festival, which will pay tribute to the storied careers of 20 of the game's greatest stars. 

The weekend's celebration will include a celebrity golf tournament, a live concert, a grand parade, a flag football game featuring the Hall of Fame class, a youth clinic, culminating with the Enshrinement Dinner and Show on Saturday night. Tickets for all events go on sale to the general public this month. Space is limited. Contact the Hall of Fame at 517-235-5717 to purchase tickets. The NFF's Play It Smart program is currently recruiting applicants for the position of "Academic Coach" on behalf of its member schools and school districts. The academic coach position requires a minimum of a bachelor's degree, experience in the field of academic-athletic counseling, education, or related field, and a demonstrated appreciation of interscholastic athletics. Jack Grinold, namesake of the Jack Grinold/Greater Boston Chapter and Northeastern associate director of athletics, has made a $1 million donation to NU athletics. It is the largest contribution to athletics ever made by a university staff member and celebrates Grinold's 47th year in Northeastern athletics in June. 

The chapter will celebrate its annual Scholar-Athlete Awards Dinner tonight in Randolph, Mass. The banquet will honor Harvard head coach Tim Murphy with the Contribution to Football Award and former Boston University star Bob Minihane with the Distinguished American Award.

Upcoming NFF Chapter scholar-athlete events include: Greater Austin, Capital District (N.Y.), Jack Grinold (Boston), and Memphis - all on Monday; San Bernardino (Calif.) on Saturday, May 17; Maine on May 21; Las Vegas on May 23; and Joe Tiller (Ind.) on June 13.

Northwestern is sponsoring a Buddy Ball Day for approximately 25 special needs children in the Evanston-Chicago area... Delaware head coach K.C. Keeler and his wife Janice will serve as guest chefs for the annual fundraiser to support the Boys and Girls Clubs of Delaware on June 19... Ohio State athletics will receive a Diversity in Athletics Award in the category of Overall Excellence in Diversity at the NACDA Convention in Dallas... Hendrix (Ark.) has voted to add football (at an unspecified date) to its athletics program with NCAA Division III status. Football last was contested at HC in 1960... Over 700 people participated in the inaugural Coach Hep Indiana Cancer Challenge cycle/run/walk event last Saturday. The event honored former Hoosiers coach Terry Hoeppner, who died last year after battling brain cancer, and was hosted by his widow Jane Hoeppner and other family members... The 45,000-square foot Sports Museum of America opens Wednesday in New York. The new facility contains over 600 artifacts, 1,100-plus photos and more than 25 interactive displays. The museum also will display the very first Heisman Trophy, which was won by Chicago's Jay Berwanger in 1935..

College Football Hall of Famer Grant Teaff is one of the featured speakers at the National Association of Two-Year College Athletic Administrators meetings in Dallas this June... The Mid-American Conference has moved its 2008 media days at Ford Field to July 28-29 in Detroit.

NCAA Academic Progress Rates (APR) were released last week. The Top Five football APR scores among FBS members for 2007-08 were Stanford (986), Navy (979), Rutgers (977), Duke (977), and Air Force (976). 

Baldwin-Wallace College will break ground at the George Finnie Stadium on Saturday as it changes to Finnie Stadium/Tressel Field. The name change honors College Football Hall of Fame coach Dr. Lee Tressel, father of Ohio State mentor Jim Tressel... Chattanooga played its spring game at Chamberlain Field, which turns 100 years old this year. Chamberlain, the home to Mocs football from 1908 to 1997, was the second-oldest on- campus football facility in the nation next to Harvard Stadium upon its closing in October of 1997. Over 80 former players returned for the special occasion... Rutgers has begun sales of first-ever premium seats in the new mezzanine boxes for the 2008 campaign... Kentucky is upgrading the Nutter Field House practice facility with FieldTurf... Northern Arizona has installed a removable REALGRASS Matrix system at J. Lawrence Walkup Skydome for the 2008 season... Kent State and Missouri State will utilize a new Daktronics HD-X message and scoreboard systems for '08 football... Northwestern State and Daktronics have partnered for new scoreboards and message displays at Turpin Stadium.

Colt Holbert of Mississippi State has received the 2008 Ben E. Keith Scholarship from the Field Scovell Foundation in Dallas... Maryland OT Edwin Williams is one of five national recipients of the 2008 Wilma Rudolph Student-Athlete Achievement Award. The award honors student- athletes who have overcome great personal, academic, and/or emotional odds to achieve success in the classroom. Williams is the only football standout on the 2008 list... Steve Roberts (Valdosta State), Kevin Ruple (Baldwin-Wallace) and Jim Wright (NCAA) have been selected to the 40th Hall of Fame class for College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA)...

The Rimington Trophy released its 2008 spring Watch List, which includes 2007 winner Jonathan Luigs of Arkansas. There are 42 student- athletes on the initial list... The FWAA will release the Bronko Nagurski Award's first watch list later today.

The Emerald Bowl in San Francisco will be played on Dec. 27, 2008 at AT&T Park... The PetroSun Independence Bowl will fete its 2008 Hall of Honor class on June 19 in Shreveport with former LSU QB Herb Tyler, Alabama head coach Nick Saban and former Indiana coach Terry Hoeppner (posthumously)... The Rose Bowl is undertaking a major revamp of its game records through the first 94 contests and will be releasing details and updates in coming months.

Northern Iowa has signed an eight-year multimedia agreement for athletics with Learfield Sports... Brown has inked a marketing and communications contract with Nelligan Sports... Butler has signed a multi-year apparel contract with Nike.

Johnny Frank Turner, 55, who started at center for Texas Lutheran's 1974 NAIA championship team, died last week after a long bout with cancer.
