COOPERSTOWN, NY): Baseball fans from across the country will have the chance this fall to do something many Hall of Famers only dream of: Play ball in Cooperstown. The National Baseball Hall of Fame’s 2008 Fantasy Camp will turn those dreams into reality, as campers will compete with and against former Major Leaguers at historic Doubleday Field.
“It’s first-class all the way,” said Hall of Fame pitcher Phil Niekro, who will serve as a team manager in the 2008 Hall of Fame Fantasy Camp, along with fellow Hall of Famers George Brett, Mike Schmidt and Ozzie Smith. “Because of that, we have a lot of repeat campers. But we’re always looking for some new friends, too.” The 2008 Hall of Fame Fantasy Camp will be held October 1-6 in Cooperstown. Amidst the changing leaves and warm afternoons, campers practice and play at Doubleday Field – just a short walk from the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum. In addition to the Hall of Famers in attendance, campers will receive instruction and compete against former Major Leaguers Dave Bergman, Vince Coleman, Von Hayes, Lance Niekro, Jamie Quirk and Jon Warden. “There’s good fellowship, good new friends you meet and sometimes good new business deals,” Niekro said. “It really doesn’t get any better than that.” After each day’s activities, campers will stay at Cooperstown’s luxurious Otesaga Hotel, overlooking Otsego Lake. Campers have the chance to play the Leatherstocking Golf Course with the Hall of Famers, get a behind-the-scenes tour of the Museum and enjoy a candlelight dinner in the Hall of Fame Gallery at the Camp’s close. Campers are scheduled to play a minimum of three games (weather permitting) on Doubleday Field. The Fantasy Camp experience is available for just $8,495, and includes accommodations and unique gifts, as well as the camp experience. Campers must provide own travel to Albany or Syracuse. Spots can be reserved by calling 607-547-0369 or by sending an e-mail to
