(COOPERSTOWN, NY) – Jerry Tucker defeated Austin Straub on the first sudden-death playoff hole to capture the Otesaga Hotel Seniors Open golf championship on Friday.
Tucker, of Stuart, Fla., shot a 73 in Friday’s final round, finishing with a three-day total of 215. Straub, of Cold Spring, N.Y., shot a 74 on Friday – also good for a total of 215. After completing their regulation round, Tucker and Straub replayed the 18th hole, and Tucker came away with the victory.
“On this course, you can never say that you were in control,” said the 59-year-old Tucker, who took home the $10,000 winner’s check. “But I didn’t have a double bogey all week and I didn’t have a three-putt all week. The consistency paid off.”
Tucker shot a 69 in Round One on Wednesday and followed that with a 73 on Thursday. Straub, the 1996 Otesaga Hotel Seniors Open champion, shot a 72 on Wednesday and a 69 on Thursday.
Defending champion Scott Spence of Portsmouth, R.I., finished tied for third place with Chris Caulfield of Newtown, Conn., Steve Sieg of Shrewsbury, N.J., and Tony Saraceno of Cortland, N.Y. Each finished the tournament with a score of 218.
Saraceno held the lead after Round One. Fran Marrello of Plymouth, Conn., held the lead after the second day of play. Marrello finished in a tie for seventh place with a 219.
The 26th annual tournament featured 126 senior golfers from throughout the country competing for a total purse of $100,000. The traditional post-Labor Day event is hosted by the Otesaga Hotel and its Leatherstocking Golf Course, and presented by sponsors NBT Bank, Coca-Cola Enterprises and Strategic Financial Services, LLC, of Utica.
Proceeds from this event benefit Pathfinder Village, located in nearby Edmeston, a residential community dedicated to children and adults with Down syndrome. Annually, the Seniors Open raises more than $50,000 for scholarships for Pathfinder Village and directly helps the Village’s 80-plus residents.
Proceeds also benefit the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum educational programs, which enable the world-famous Museum to fulfill its educational mission and care for its collections.
