INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – A host of Hall of Famers, including legendary figures in basketball such as George Gervin, Rick Barry and Calvin Murphy, will participate in The Hartford Hall of Fame Celebrity Golf Showcase on Oct. 6 at Brickyard Crossing in Indianapolis. The outing serves as a kick-off to The Hartford Hall of Fame Showcase, the first basketball event in the new Lucas Oil Stadium on Dec. 6. The four coaches of the doubleheader – Indiana’s Tom Crean, Ohio State’s Thad Matta and Notre Dame’s Mike Brey – will be on-hand for the golf festivities which includes a 10 a.m. press conference with the three coaches and Gonzaga’s Mark Few joining by phone.

The Hartford Hall of Fame Showcase, which is owned and managed by BEST, was launched at U.S. Airways Center in Phoenix in Dec. 2006 and visited Boston’s TD Banknorth Garden last year.  The doubleheader serves as a mobile “bowl-like” event for college hoops, featuring four college basketball programs while building the brand and image of the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame, a non-profit institution that recognizes excellence at all levels of the game.  The Hartford Financial Services Group, Inc. (NYSE: HIG), partnered last year to become title sponsor of the event.

More than a dozen enshrined members of the Basketball Hall of Fame are expected to participate in this year’s Celebrity Golf Showcase on the famed course that includes four holes inside the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Gervin, Barry, and Murphy will join Hall of Famers Meadowlark Lemon, Marques Haynes, Bailey Howell and Cathy Rush and the newly named “Voice of the Final Four” Clark Kellogg for an unforgettable day of golf. The event serves as the first of many in the Circle City associated with the doubleheader. In December, the Hall of Fame will play host to a youth clinic for underprivileged kids and a corporate “Tip-Off” reception, all leading up to the basketball doubleheader where Indiana will face preseason top-10 favorite Gonzaga and Big East-favorite Notre Dame will take on 2007 NCAA runner-up Ohio State. Last year, the Greater Boston Convention and Visitor’s Bureau estimated the event’s effect on its local economy to reach nearly $10 million.
