(COOPERSTOWN, NY) – Baseball’s greatest players cultivate success through strength of character and depth of courage.
The National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum will celebrate those timeless values on Saturday, Nov. 1 through its first Character and Courage Weekend, featuring the historic unveiling of a new statue in the Museum’s lobby. The statue depicts Hall of Famers Roberto Clemente, Lou Gehrig and Jackie Robinson as symbols of character and courage, reflecting the achievements of the three Hall of Famers as beacons of those characteristics.
Made possible through a magnanimous gift by Museum supporter Bob Crotty, the statue will be a permanent addition to the Museum’s lobby. Boston Red Sox pitcher Curt Schilling, along with the families of Jackie Robinson and Roberto Clemente, will dedicate the statue at 1 p.m. on Nov. 1, along with Hall of Fame officials. Among those expected to attend to represent the families: Rachel Robinson, Jackie’s widow; Vera Clemente, Roberto’s widow; Luis and Roberto Jr., the sons of Clemente; along with author Jonathan Eig, whose landmark books on Gehrig and Robinson captured the selfless spirit of the two players.
The Character and Courage statue was created by world-famous sculptor Stanley Bleifeld, who has previously designed Hall of Fame tributes to Women in Baseball, Satchel Paige and Roy Campanella and Johnny Podres of the 1955 Brooklyn Dodgers.
“We are honored that Bob Crotty, a generous Museum supporter, commissioned this magnificent work of art of these three icons, all of whom truly embody the qualities of character and courage," said Hall of Fame President Jeff Idelson. "The virtues they displayed on the field and in everyday life are inspiring. We are thrilled to have Roberto's and Jackie's families, as well as pitching great Curt Schilling, who has a profound respect for Gehrig, in Cooperstown during this seminal moment in Museum history.”
Other Character and Courage events on Nov. 1 at the Hall of Fame include:
n Interactive learning stations in the Museum at 10 and 11 a.m. and noon, featuring lessons based on the three honorees
n Sandlot Stories at 9:45, 10:45 and 11:45 a.m. in the Sandlot Kids Clubhouse, where children are invited to hear how the three Hall of Famers exemplified their values
n A Voices of the Game presentation at 2 p.m. in the Museum's Grandstand Theater, featuring Curt Schilling, members of the Clemente family and author Jonathan Eig. A ticket is required for this event and costs $10 for adults and $5 for children under 12. Members may reserve tickets immediately, and any remaining tickets will be made available to non-Members the day of the event at the Membership and Museum services desk located in the Museum (Museum admission is still required for any non-Members interested in attending). The National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum is open seven days a week year round, with the exception of Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s Day. From Memorial Day through Labor Day, the Museum is open from 9 a.m. until 9 p.m. seven days a week. The Museum observes off-season hours of 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. from the day after Labor Day until Memorial Day Weekend. Ticket prices are $16.50 for adults (13 and over), $11 for seniors (65 and over) and for those holding current memberships in the VFW, Disabled American Veterans, American Legion and AMVets organizations, and $6 for juniors (ages 7-12). Members are always admitted free of charge and there is no charge for children 6 years of age or younger.
