COOPERSTOWN, N.Y. – Carl Mays’ delivery was unorthodox. So were his results. Now, Mays will be considered for another unique honor: election to the Baseball Hall of Fame by the Veterans Committee.
Mays (Nov. 12, 1891-April 4, 1971) was one of the top right-handed pitchers in Major League Baseball from 1916-1929. He played for the Boston Red Sox (1915-1919), the New York Yankees (1919-1923), the Cincinnati Reds (1924-1928) and the New York Giants (1929). Over 15 seasons in the majors, Mays posted a 208-126 record with a 2.92 ERA.
A submarine-style pitcher, Mays won 20 or more games five times, also winning 19 and 18 games once each. He had an outstanding 1921 season, going 27-9 with a 3.05 ERA, leading the AL in wins, winning percentage, games, innings and saves. He ranked third in complete games and ERA.
Mays pitched for six pennant winning teams (and two second-place clubs) and pitched in four World Series, two with New York and two with Boston, coming away with rings in Boston.
On July 14, 1916, Mays pitched the first 15 innings in Boston’s 17-inning scoreless tie with the Browns.
Although numbers show his greatness as a pitcher, Mays is also remembered for throwing the pitch that struck Ray Chapman of the Indians in the head on Aug. 16, 1920. Chapman later died.
Mays will be considered for the Hall of Fame as part of the pre-1943 Veterans Committee ballot (players who began their careers before 1943). Other members of the pre-1943 Veterans Committee final ballot include Bill Dahlen, Wes Ferrell, Joe Gordon, Sherry Magee, Allie Reynolds, Vern Stephens, Mickey Vernon, Bucky Walters and Deacon White. Any player receiving at least 75 percent of the vote from the Veterans Committee will be enshrined at the Hall of Fame as part of the Class of 2009.
Results from the Veterans Committee vote will be announced Dec. 8 at baseball’s Winter Meetings. For more information about Veterans Committee finalists, visit www.baseballhall.org.
