NEWPORT, RI – The International Tennis Hall of Fame & Museum announced today that ATP World Tour Pros Robby Ginepri and Sam Querrey have entered the Campbell’s Hall of Fame Tennis Championships, to be held July 6-12.
Robby Ginepri will return to Newport, having captured the title here in 2003. Currently at No. 66 in the South African Airways ATP Rankings, Ginepri will be making his fourth overall appearance on the legendary grass courts of the International Tennis Hall of Fame. Wrapping up 2008, the 26-year-old American finished at No. 51 in the world for the second time in three years. He reached the semifinals at Delray Beach, San Jose and Las Vegas, while also reaching the quarterfinal at Pörtschach (Austria). His first-ever career ATP World Tour title was won in Newport, where, as the fourth seed, he drove through the draw into the final without dropping a set. In the championship final, he met up with Austria’s Jurgen Melzer, splitting sets before rallying to capture the Van Alen Cup 6-4, 6-7(3), 6-1. At Grand Slam events, Ginepri has reached the semifinal at the US Open, and has also reached the fourth rounds at the Australian Open, Roland Garros and Wimbledon.
Sam Querrey is one of the top Americans in the rankings to watch. The six-foot, six-inch Californian has been impressive, finishing 2008 in the Top 50 for the first time in his career. He captured his first ATP title in Las Vegas and reached a Grand Slam best 4th round at the US Open. He also advanced to the 3rd round at the Australian Open, the semifinal at both Delray Beach and Indianapolis and the quarterfinal at Monte Carlo. He also made his U.S. Davis Cup debut in the semifinal against Spain. The 21-year-old continues to improve in 2009, reaching the final in Auckland and the quarterfinals at both San Jose and Memphis. He is currently ranked at No. 44 in the world and is the fourth-ranked American behind Andy Roddick, James Blake and Mardy Fish. Querrey will be making his second appearance in Newport. In 2006, at age 18, he was given a wild card into the Campbell’s Hall of Fame Tennis Championships, his first professional ATP World Tour event after turning pro in June. (He won his first round match, and then bowed to the tournament’s No. 1 seed, Andy Murray.)
The Campbell’s Hall of Fame Tennis Championships features 32 of the top men in professional tennis competing for $500,000 in prize money. The Newport Tournament, an ATP World Tour event, brings the top men in professional tennis to Rhode Island to play on the legendary grass courts at the International Tennis Hall of Fame & Museum. The first U.S. National Lawn Tennis Championships were played in Newport in 1881, the tournament which evolved into the US Open. Today, the Campbell’s Hall of Fame Tennis Championships remains the only professional tournament played on grass in North America.
