DAPHNE, Ala. - The United States Sports Academy, home of the American Sport Art Museum and Archives (ASAMA), will host an art show featuring Tuscaloosa, Alabama sport artist Rick Rush on 9 November from 5-7 p.m. at the Academy's campus in Daphne. The art show is open free to the public.
The art show will honor the arrival of Abbot Shi Yongxin, who will receive an honorary doctorate from the Academy on 10 November and host a Kung Fu seminar and free demonstration on 11 November at the Daphne Civic Center. The Abbot is the leader of China's Shaolin Temple. Please visit http://www.ussa.edu/ussanet/tempShaolin.asp for more information. Forty-three Rush serigraphs were recently donated to ASAMA by an anonymous donor and will be displayed in the main lobby of the Academy. Practicing sports art since 1975, Rush's work has captured special moments in professional and college football and basketball as well as golf, polo, and many other events. Rush's work has been commissioned and owned by two U.S. presidents as well as many well-known financiers, entertainers and sports stars. His art can also be found in the collections of the All-England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club, the site of the Wimbledon tennis championships. Capturing the spirit of the moment, Rush combines traditional realism with the subtle interplay of light reminiscent of Impressionism, one of Rush's early influences. The excitement of his work results from his technique, whereby he abstracts the central figures by applying bold brushstrokes to realistically rendered images. Utilizing this technique, allows Rush to portray the initial moment of the movement. Rush also adds greater depth and translucence to his work with this layering effect. Located on the campus of the Academy, ASAMA houses what is believed to be the largest collection of fine sport art in the world and is dedicated to the collection, display and preservation of sports history, art and literature. The museum exhibits world-renowned sport artists LeRoy Neiman, Hans Erni, Charles Billich, Ernie Barnes and the famed Spanish artist Cristóbal Gabarrón. Visit www.asama.org for more information. ASAMA is open free to the public 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday.
