Baseball HOF Sponsors Artifact Memory Contest

HOFMAG.com Staff

COOPERSTOWN, NY – The Hall of Fame's second annual "Artifact Memory" contest offers baseball fans across the country the opportunity to share a story of their favorite or most memorable personal artifact of baseball history with Museum professionals at the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum. The six entrants who share the most compelling stories will be asked to present at the Hall of Fame on Feb. 17 in Cooperstown.

Fans should submit their story – which must be received by Feb. 2 – electronically by visiting baseballhalloffame.org, where they can fill out an on-line form, or by sending a typed copy to: Artifact Memory Contest, National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum, 25 Main Street, Cooperstown, N.Y. 13326. They should choose a favorite baseball artifact in their possession or personal collection. Stories might reveal how the item was acquired, its historical significance, or its unique and meaningful connection to the game.

The six finalists will present their artifact story to a panel of Museum experts, who will serve as judges. The 10-minute presentations will be part of a public program open to all Museum visitors. The best artifact presentation will earn the winner a one-year complimentary membership to the Museum. Existing members will receive an upgrade to the next membership level.

Each of the six finalists will receive free admission to the Museum on Feb. 17.

Last year's winner, Anthony Colao of Bayside, N.Y., wrote about a ball autographed by the 1976 New York Yankees, given to his 22-month-old daughter, Elizabeth Ann, along with a letter from owner George Steinbrenner wishing her well in her battle with cancer. Other finalists wrote about items ranging from those acquired during a semester as a Brooklyn Dodgers batboy to a Boston Red Sox baseball card from the year the owner was born.
