Detroit, Michigan – (March 23, 2007) – Hitting machine and baseball hall of famer Wade Boggs will induct the late Curt Hennig – a.k.a. Mr. Perfect – into the WWE Hall of Fame during a ceremony on Saturday night March 31st at the Fox Theatre in Detroit, the night before Wrestlemania XXIII.
Boggs and Hennig met in 1983 in Rochester, New York and maintained a close friendship for many years. They often enjoyed hunting and fishing trips together, and on one occasion Boggs credits Hennig with saving his life. During a hunting trip in 2001, Boggs became entangled in a barbed wire fence and badly lacerated his leg. Hennig carried the injured Boggs a mile to their truck and transported him to the hospital. While Boggs gives the induction speech for Hennig, the wrestler's father will be speaking on his behalf accepting the award. Curt Hennig died in February 2003 at the age of 44 before a wrestling bout scheduled for that day. The Tampa Coroner's office and the Tampa Medical Examiner's office declared acute cocaine intoxication the official cause of his death. His father, wrestler Larry "The Axe" Hennig, claimed a lethal combination of steroids and painkillers contributed to his death. In addition to Curt Hennig, the other members of the 2007 WWE Hall of Fame Class will include Jerry "The King" Lawker, Nick Bockwinkle, Dusty Rhodes, The Original Sheik and Mr. Fuji. An additional two wrestlers will be announced in the next few days. The expected induction speeches for these men will come from William Shatner, Bobby "The Brain" Heenan, Dustin and Cody Runnels (sons), Sabu (nephew) and Don Muraco. Boggs was inducted into Baseball Hall of Fame in 2005 and is a member of the exclusive club of players who have more than 3,000 career hits. |
