A Note on Hotels:

Conventional wisdom suggests that once you get to a destination, you stay put. I take issue with such an assumption. Sampling the lodging of a city can be like sampling the food. Moving every day is impractical, but consider dividing your stay in Nashville among a couple hotels, perhaps one in the heart of downtown, such as the all-suite Hilton (www1.hilton.com) at 4th Avenue South or the luxurious Hermitage (www.thehermitagehotel.com) at 6th Avenue North. And for another view of the city, consider the Lowe's Vanderbilt (www.loewshotels.com) at 2100 West End Ave near the university and Hillsboro Village on the west side of town. The Union Station Hotel (www.unionstationhotelnashville.com) on Broadway – about halfway between the west end and downtown – was once a grand train depot and is about to complete a major renovation. Union Station a historical gem all by itself.

HOFMAG.com's Hall of Fame Itinerary for Nashville

Playing a whole trip by ear is one method that works for some, but so much is going on, and so much should be experienced, that HOFMAG.com has put together a five-night, four-complete-day itinerary that will make a visit to Nashville full and efficient for most all tastes. One caveat: Nashville is Music City, so expect all kinds and lots of it.

Friday Evening:

Willie Nelson
Casey "Willie Nelson" Ferguson offers an up-close and personal tour of Nashville's downtown.

Arrive in Nashville in the afternoon, get settled in the hotel and try dinner downtown at Merchants Restaurant, (www.merchantsrestaurant.com) corner of Broadway and Fourth Avenue South. Merchant's is upscale, We'll get to the finger food soon enough. To kick it up another notch, try The Capitol Grille, (www.thehermitagehotel.com) a celebrated and award-winning venue at The Hermitage Hotel (231 Sixth Avenue North) whose dinner menus, exclusive wine list, and impeccable service is legend in Nashville.

Fine dining is the right choice before an evening at the Schermerhorn Symphony Center, one of the city's crown jewels. Most weekend evening nights something classical is happening at the Schermerhorn, whether it's the Nashville Symphony or a visiting quartet or solo performer.

After the concert is over, take a walk across the nearby pedestrian bridge spanning the Cumberland River and remove the necktie or high heels as a kind of transition to the next phase of Music City. Head back to Broadway, and just stick out your ears. Dozens of bars and saloons will compete for your attention. Linger by the door, and if you like what you hear, go in. If you don't, keep on moving until you do. Pure country, bluegrass, rock-a-billy, even karaoke will all be there. You want blues, stroll to BB Kings Blues Club (www.bbkingclubs.com) on 2nd Ave. North.
