11 Inducted to Jewish Sports Hall of Fame

National Jewish Sports Hall of Fame

Eleven people from the world of sports were inducted into The National Jewish Sports Hall of Fame & Museum at the 15th Annual Induction Ceremony on Sunday, April 29, 2007,at The Suffolk Y Jewish Community Center, 74 Hauppauge Road, Commack, NY.

The Honorees Included:

Senda Berenson - "The mother of women's basketball," she introduced the sport of women's basketball in the U.S.

Bonnie Bernstein - One of the most recognizable and highly respected journalists in the field. In July, 2006, she signed on with ABC/ESPN.

Howard Cosell - Perhaps the most colorful and controversial national sports reporter and personality in American media.

Harry Haft - Haft was only 16 when he was sent to the concentration camps. Forced to fight other Jews in bare knuckle bouts for the entertainment of S.S. officers. Ultimately, escaping the camp, Harry traveled to America and became a pro boxer.

George Kalinsky - Known as the "Official Photographer for Madison Square Garden," which has allowed him to create famous images of famous people.

Deena Kastor - Currently one of the top female distance runners in the world, grabbed the bronze medal in the women's marathon at the 2004 Olympics.

Craig Ludin - Special Olympian who won 2 bronze medals and 1 silver at the recent National Special Olympics. Craig also competes in soccer, golf, power lifting and floor hockey.

Dan Lurie - Three time AAU most muscular man in America, publisher of "Muscle Training Illustrated," trainer of world champions, one of the leaders in the world of bodybuilding.

Jerry Markbreit - After officiating Big Ten football, Jerry, in 1976, became an NFL Line Judge, and in 1977 he was promoted to NFL referee. He was lead referee at 4 super bowls.

Lennie Rosenbluth - UNC Consensus All-America led the Tar Heels to an undefeated 1957 season, the NCAA championship and "Collegiate Player of the Year."

Mark Spitz - Perhaps the greatest swimmer in history, winner of 7 gold medals at the 1972 Olympics.

Dwight Stones - Ten times he set the world record in the high jump, winner of bronze medals in both the 1972 and 1976 Olympics, no American dominated the event like he did.

"Our inductees truly exemplify what The National Jewish Sports Hall of Fame and Museum is all about," said Lynne Kramer, Esq., Chairman of the Hall of Fame. In their own way, each of them have overcome adversities, challenged stereotypes and blazed a trail for others to follow. We hope by honoring these Jewish men and women for their accomplishments we can show young Jews that there are no limits for them."
