World Figure Skating Museum & Hall of Fame Teams With Sports Museum of America

World Figure Skating Museum & Hall of Fame
(Colorado Springs, Colo.) September 27, 2007 - World Figure Skating Museum & Hall of Fame President Jan Serafine announced today a partnership with the Sports Museum of America (SmA).

The World Figure Skating Museum (WFSM) now joins over 60 single-sport halls of fame, governing bodies, museums and other sports organizations across North America as a founding partner of the Sports Museum of America (SmA).  Scheduled to open in New York City in April 2008, SmA is the nation's first and only museum in North America to celebrate all sports under one roof.  Filled with original films, state-of-the-art interactives and an iconic collection of memorabilia, SmA will richly showcase the history, grandeur and significance of sports in American culture through great sports' stories of courage, education and triumph.

Dick Button, vice president of the WFSM, explained how this partnership will bring the greatest figure skaters to new audiences.  He elaborated: "Great skaters are those who have not only reached the top of this sport, but made it different and better because they participated in it.  The World Figure Skating Museum & Hall of Fame celebrates and honors these great skaters and their memorable performances.  The new partnership with the Sports Museum of America will expand this opportunity and help us reach an ever-widening global audience.  We welcome this partnership."

"The Sports Museum of America is extremely pleased to have the World Figure Skating Museum and Hall of Fame join our more than 60 sports partner organizations to create the first comprehensive museum of sports," says Founder and CEO Philip Schwalb. "We are particularly excited because of the special place that figure skating holds in the hearts and minds of American sports' enthusiasts.  Arguably the most beloved of the winter sports, SmA looks forward to sharing figure skating's tremendous legacy -- from Dick Button to Sarah Hughes to the stars of tomorrow -- with the millions of visitors to our museum.  And as with all our partners who have made SmA possible, we will also educate our fans about the World Figure Skating Museum & Hall of Fame in Colorado Springs, and try to inspire them to visit there for the ultimate celebration of figure skating."

Under the terms of the partnership, the WFSM will provide archival figure skating materials, such as Olympic memorabilia from such skating icons as 1948 and 1952 Olympic gold medalist Dick Button and 1988 Olympic gold medalist Brian Boitano.  Other archival material pertaining to the history of figure skating and of interest to the projected one million world-wide annual visitors will be sent on a rotating basis.  Likewise, joint marketing efforts will be undertaken by both partners, and SmA will make an annual donation to support the WFSM.

SmA is widely anticipated to be a vibrant new addition to the redevelopment of Lower Manhattan by significantly increasing commercial and tourist activity in the area.  As a long-time resident of New York, Button is especially pleased that the SmA will be located in New York City.  "It will bring an increased awareness of the wonderful aspects of the fine art of figure skating to both residents and visitors alike," he said.
